The Department has two main sections, namely:
- Electrical Power
- Electronic
The courses offered in the Department are at Artisan, Craft Certificate and Diploma levels and are examined by Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) and City & Guilds International. We are also a registered Center for the Directorate of Industrial Training Grade III Electrical Wireman and Electrical Fitter examinations.
We cater for students who wish to pursue their courses in Full-time, Part-time and Evening programs. The department has a Staff of twenty one Lecturers, two Technicians and a population of over 800. We have fully embraced the new revised Modular syllabus for both the Certificate and Diploma Courses in Electrical Engineering.
The Department together with its sister Departments of Automotive Engineering and Mechanical and Chemical Engineering have been the beneficiaries of the KENYA – NETHERLANDS Technical Support Project. This has been in the form of refurbishment of the workshops and the installation of large quantities of modern equipment. Lecturers in these departments have also undergone training in the use of this equipment. This has enhanced the capacity of the department to effectively offer a wide range of courses including tailor made ones for special groups.
In response to market demands, the department has been offering evening courses for Certificate and Diploma Electrical Power students drawn from the job market since 2007 with significant success. The majority of these evening students have been from Kenya Power.
The Department was approved to offer Photo-Voltaic Solar training courses which commenced in December 2013. This training was enhanced in September 2014 when the Institute signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Kenya Renewable Energy Association (KEREA) which subsidized the fee for the trainees. The main donor was USAID. The Institute has also forged a partnership with Strathmore University for PV Solar training.
